Vinyl

Vinyl has various qualities that make it one of the most versatile floorcoverings used. It is durable, hard-wearing, slip-resistant, moisture-resistant, hygienic and insulating.  It offers a variety of designs, patterns, textures and colours and are usually produced in a sheet or tile form.  The variety of styles include; tiles, plain, wood, stone and mosaic.  It is suitable to almost any space because of its durability and is easy to clean and maintain.  Vinyl works with underfloor heating up to 27 degrees.

The qualities of Vinyl include:

  • Slip prevention: ideal for areas such as kitchens, toilets, bars and any wet areas.

  • Electrical resistance: used in operating theatres, laboratories or similar areas to protect electro sensitivity.

  • Sound insulation: reduces noise levels.

  • Moisture resistance: excellent for toilets, baths and shower rooms.

All vinyl floorcoverings require specialist preparation and insulation to comply with Australian standards and manufacturer’s recommendations.

Rubber

Rubber floorcovering is available in a variety of colours and textures in both sheets and tiles.  It can incorporate creative design elements as well.  Unlike vinyl, rubber can withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures without cracking, chipping or flaking.

The qualities of rubber include:

  • Elasticity: even though rubber has commercial grade durability, it is actually soft. The springy texture can help relieve fatigue with standing or walking long periods of time. This is why it is popular in retail locations and also makes it ideal in playrooms and other living areas due to its soft yielding nature. The softness can be increased by purchasing tiles with fabric, cork or foam-rubber backing.

  • Fire and burn resistance: it is resistant to burns left from small heat sources such as cigarette butts. It is non-toxic, so it won’t release harmful or poisonous fumes in the case of a fire.

  • Sound insulation: it can act as a sound insulator depending on the thickness of the tiles used. Its elastic nature can also reduce sound from walking and rolling carts.

  • Natural slip-resistance.

  • Resistance to marking: this includes impact marks and scuffing.

Although rubber flooring is resistant to most staining agents, there are some products that can discolour it such as detergents and other abrasive cleaning liquids.  Excessive light can be especially harmful to rubber floors.  Grease can also have a drastic effect if it is not wiped up immediately.

Linoleum

Linoleum is environmentally friendly which is made from natural materials. This includes wood flour, rosin, jute and limestone which are blended together with linseed oil and colour pigments to create a homogenous floorcovering.  It usually has a burlap or canvas backing.

Linoleum products are hardwearing and very easily maintained.  They offer a variety of colours and design palettes which gives the opportunity to incorporate borders, logos, patterns and photographic images, creating unique designs.

Linoleum qualities include:

  • Durability and flexibility.

  • Heat and sound insulation.

  • Different colours and designs including tile, slate, wood planks and parquet.

  • Water-resistance.
